IT THOUGHT OF THE DAY
Putting the thought back into Information Technology (IT)…by Scott Coughlin-
IT Quote of the Day – Thomas Edison
Posted on February 8th, 2010 1 commentI find that there is nothing like a good, thought provoking quotation to get my creative gears grinding. I find some of them very inspirational and like to carry a new one around about every week. I thought that i could share mine with you from time to time.
Here is my quote of the day:
“Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing.”
Thomas A. Edison

News Commentary: Super Bowl Ads for Free Services?
Posted on February 7th, 2010 No commentsOn Sundays I offer comments on some of the most interesting information technology stories that I have found on the web that week. Please feel free to join in the discussion or suggest other stories.
Today, is Super Bowl Sunday! It is also poised to be one of the most disruptive in advertising history if rumors come true. Many sources are reporting that Google will air its first every Super Bowl advertisement during the game. Why is this such a big deal? Take a read below:eWeek – Google CEO Eric Schmidt Tweets Of Google Super Bowl Ad
“The search engine [Google] will apparently air an ad during the third quarter of today’s NFL Superbowl, which can cost $3 million for just 3 minutes of air time.”
If Google does run ads, one really has to come to grips with the reality that our economy has fundamentally changed. What do I mean? Well Google will be advertising something, Search Functions, that you cannot pay for. Let that sink in for a moment… Google will have made the economic decision that spending $3 Million for 30 seconds will have positive return on investment for a service that you cannot pay for! They have so fundamentally changed our information age economy that they can generate enough side revenue – from ads, banner ads, text ads, side features, etc. – that they expect to make more than their investment back! Wow! Google says often that they make more money, the longer people stay online, this advertisement would have to be testimony to the fact that this is true!
Rewrite the economics textbooks and get this word to kids in High School fast. They will soon be graduating into a world that is no longer dominated by supply and demand, rational behavior, or even lean industry practices… it is a world being powered by Google!
What do you think about this topic? Do you agree or disagree with me? Do you have a recommended news story for next week? Please share your ideas below.

Another Enterprise IT Help Desk Humor Video
Posted on February 6th, 2010 No commentsI usually feature comedy on Saturdays. In the past, I have featured jokes, comics, cartoons, and news on the weekends. Sometimes I include comics, stories, games, and photos. By far, though, humor and especially videos about Enterprise Information Technology (IT) Help Desks have been the most popular. So I have gone back to this endless well of laughs! I simply cannot get enough of comedy work about this situation!
I have picked this video to share with you as follow-up. It is called “Internet Helpdesk”… It is by miciver and it just plain funny and frighteningly accurate. The comedian’s name is Wes Borg and you can find links to all of his other stuff at his MySpace page or by Googling him. It is basically a spoof all of those – “What happens at the Enterprise IT Service Desk” videos. I hope that you like it, but BE WARNED – IT CONTAINS SOME PG-13 STYLE FOUL REFERENCE. I would consider it work passable, but be careful.
The most humorous part of all of this is that it is all so true. Some of the jokes hit a bit close to home!
I hope that I gave you a chuckle to make your weekend a little brighter. I will be back tomorrow with more serious topics!
What did you think of the video? Does it apply to your organization? Do you know of any other similar movies or clips? Please share.

Here is my quote of the day:
“Information is the oxygen of the modern age. It seeps through the walls topped by barbed wire, it wafts across the electrified borders.”
