I am on the record as being a lover of the basically defunct Tablet PC hardware/software bundle. I have written before about how much I appreciated this platform and thought that it was one of the biggest missed opportunities in the information technology business.

So, it was with great sadness that I woke up yesterday to read the news that yet another promised entry into this space has gone to the great Vaporware island of misfit toys.  Read the below story from engadget.com detailing its death.

Michael Arrington’s CrunchPad has never had a particularly firm basis in reality, and although we’d been promised that the inexpensive browser-based tablet would be launching soon, the sky’s come crashing down:

In case you missed it, the CrunchPad along with the Apple iPad have been the two hugely rumored new entries into the Tablet PC space for the past year or so.  Both were promised as portable, media rich, PC like bold new innovations in the personal computing interface.  I was hoping for a good old fashioned shoot-em-out between the two products with incredibly rapid improvement during 2010.  Now it looks like the space is completely Apples to own for at least another year.  Sounds like the iPhone story all over again!

In fact, searching their site at engadget.com is a great way to read the great story of the rise and fall of the CrunchPad.

So, here is a toast, not only to the dead CrunchPad, but to all those great Vaporware product that held our hearts and minds…
