Today, I offer comments on some of the most interesting information technology stories that I have found on the web recently.  Please feel free to join in the discussion or suggest stories during the week.

Today’s story is from PC Magazine.  It covers Google’s recent announcement that they would be offering a free, public DNS service.  Check it out here:

pcmag.com – Hands On with Google’s Public DNS

“DNS is the switchboard of the internet: Type in a text URL like www.pcmag.com, and it finds the numeric IP address to get you there. Google, which seems to be releasing something in just about every consumer-facing software space, has now entered this behind the scenes networking space with its new Google Public DNS. I set up a couple of PCs using Google Public DNS, both inside and outside of our corporate network, to see if there was any real advantages to using Google’s DNS servers. The results were mixed, although Google DNS did offer some benefits that neither your default DNS server or competitor OpenDNS do.”

My commentary is just this: thank goodness.  This is quite a good turn for security on home computers. If you  need to understand why, please Google DNS and read up on it.  Having free, public, assured DNS servers available to  everyone will dramatically reduce the incidence of many types of fraudulent activity on the web and not a moment too soon if you ask me.

Just thought that this might be interesting to Information Professionals.

What do you think about this topic?  Do you agree or disagree with me? Do you have a recommended news story for next week? Please share your ideas below.
