I can’t stand it when I show up to an organization, as an Information Technology Professional, and am immediately told that I have to execute my tasking without the aide of even the same tech tools that I have in my home.  I know that many organizations don’t allow wireless, smart phones, cell phones, camera phones, laptops, decent bandwidth, etc.  While all of these decisions are made in the name of security, cost, enterprise architecture, and configuration management, honestly, they really slow down my productivity and irk me.  Many organizations realize this is not actually in their best interests and are actively working on ways to permit personally owned tech tools to be used for their benefit in safe, secure, cost effective manners.  That is the topic of today’s story: bringing your own tech to work.

techrepublic.comThe Biggest CIO Challenge of 2010: BYOT

“The biggest challenge on the horizon for tech executives is not going to be cloud computing, virtualization or enterprise systems. Rather, it’s going to come from the grassroots of an organization in the guise of a movement to Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) to the workplace. We have all heard of how the new generation of workers will change the way employees interact with their employers, and while much of it is overblown, this is a generation that has a fundamentally different attitude towards technology that will definitely reshape corporate IT.”

Frankly, I could not agree with the author more.  The expectation gap between workers and their organizations on what technology they “need’ to do their job is ever widening.  There seems to be no end in sight.  I want my iPhone and wifi everywhere that I go!

Great story. Very timely.  Highly recommended read and think topic!

What do you think about this topic?  Do you agree or disagree with me? Do you have a recommended news story for next week? Please share your ideas below.
